Where does peace come from, writer?
Sometimes the writing process can feel fretful. Sometimes we feel behind. We struggle to find the right word, the right time. Sometimes life’s demands can eat into the creative space of the heart…and hamper our vision and flow.
So where does peace come from, writer? When all seems upended? It’s not where you might think.
“Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.” – Psalm 119:165
Isn’t that good news, writer? Our peace is found in something that cannot and will not ever change! But what does that look like? How does love of God’s law help our peace as writers?
Here’s the thing. God’s word is twofold. There is His written word—His laws. And His spoken word—His call to write. Both are meant to direct our lives, writer. When we hear His word and obey it—no matter what it looks like on the outside—it brings peace. And it does more than that—it brings life back into us and to our writing.
Still wondering what that looks like, writer?
It can look like…
- Forgiving that friend or family member who hurt you.
- Getting up fifteen minutes earlier to read your Bible and pray.
- NOT saying that knee jerk reply when you are slighted.
But it can also look like…
- Picking up that book He’s been asking you to write—even if you don’t know how it will be done or how you’ll have time, money or space to do it.
Because here’s the thing—obedience always requires faith. It requires us to trust God with the results. But here’s the other thing—obedience always brings peace. Disobedience can feel easier, because it’s based on what we see and know. But it always brings anxiety, strife, and disappointment.
So how about you today, writer? Is there something causing you a lack of peace?
If there is, I encourage you to go back to the words of His law, to a promise of scripture that speaks to your situation…or go back to a spoken direction that you know He has given you…and then begin to move forward with that word. To pray it. To meditate on it. To speak it. To believe it. To praise Him for it. To seek His wisdom with it. To take a small step forward in it. To make your next decision based on it.
As you take that heart-pounding step of faith, you will find His peace that passes understanding waiting on the other side.
