You’ve been set free! How did your week go after that? My guess is that you probably had some highs and lows as you wrestled to figure this freedom thing out. Trust me, if that’s you, you are in the right place!
The first step toward freedom is knowing that freedom is yours—and believing it. But if you find yourself struggling to walk out that truth daily, I have more good news for you. Your King has given you a key to help you unlock the chains. And that key is His word.
If you abide in my words, then you are truly my disciples and you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. – John 8:31
For every lie that’s keeping you bound, writer, there is a word from God waiting to set you free. It may be a word of scripture that the Lord has given. It may be a special word of calling He’s spoken to you in prayer or through a trusted mentor or friend. Often times, it’s both.
But whatever that word is, writer, I’m here to remind you—God’s words to you will not return void. They accomplish the purpose for which they were sent. And that’s not just for the super spiritual things. It’s for your writing, too.
So how does that happen? After all, the word comes as a seed. (Mark 4:1-19) And a seed has the power to grow—for as long as it exists. But guess what? Nothing happens unless someone sticks that seed in the ground. In the same way, every word the Lord give is waiting for you to begin to abide in it. That word the Lord gave you, writer, He wants you to start living it.
How? You begin by taking it deep—by believing it. And because faith comes by hearing, you pray that word, speak that word, picture yourself living that word—every day. And as you do, you begin to ask the Lord for one small step to make into that word He’s given you.
This is what it looks like to abide in the truth. To “know” it. Because that word “know” means to experience. As we start to live out the words the Lord’s given us, we begin to experience the truth. When that happens, we begin to walk in the truth. And lies begin to fall away like tissue paper.
So I encourage you today, writer! Do you have a word—a promise from God—about your writing? If you don’t, ask Him. He is the giver of all good gifts. And if you do have a word—or a few—begin today to abide in it. To pray it. To speak it. To imagine it. Taking that first small step. As you do, you will be on your way to freedom!
