Oklahoma Christian Fiction Writers – Cara Putman
Why do some stories grip readers while others fall flat—even with a strong premise? Often, the difference lies in the strength and alignment of the story’s threads. In this workshop, Cara C. Putman, JD, MBA, breaks down the three critical threads every novel needs: external plot, internal character arc, and spiritual or thematic journey.
Using a six-stage external story structure, attendees will learn how to identify key turning points, deepen conflict, and ensure their plot delivers rising action and a satisfying payoff. The workshop then turns inward, examining the character’s emotional journey—longing, need, wound, belief, fear, identity, and essence—and how this internal arc must mirror and support the external events of the story. For Christian authors, special attention is given to crafting a meaningful spiritual journey, including moral premise, theme, and moments of grace that reinforce the story’s deeper truth.
Packed with examples, questions, and exercises writers can apply immediately, this session equips authors to evaluate their current work-in-progress, strengthen weak threads, and intentionally weave a story that resonates emotionally, spiritually, and structurally with readers.
