Who do you write for, writer? For whom are you penning that story in your heart?
Some write for themselves. Some write for readers. Some write for the recognition of peers. Some write for money.
But if our targets are meant to inspire us, it’s no wonder so many
books are left undone. Sometimes a failure to write is simply that we’ve
aimed too low. But there is good news, writer. If you are in need of
fresh vision, there is one “who” who cares if you write.
Let me introduce you to the King of writers.
Psalm 45: 1- My heart overflows with a [a]goodly
theme; I address my psalm to a King. My tongue is like the pen of a
ready writer.2 You are fairer than the children of men; graciousness is poured upon Your lips; therefore God has blessed You forever.
Writer, there is a King who’s gifted you YOUR story.
Why you? Why your story?
Psalm 45:3 – Gird Your sword upon Your thigh, O mighty One, in Your glory and Your majesty!
4 And in Your majesty ride on triumphantly for the cause of
truth, humility, and righteousness (uprightness and right standing with
God); and let Your right hand guide You to tremendous things.5 Your arrows are sharp; the peoples fall under You; Your darts pierce the hearts of the King’s enemies.
6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; the scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
7 You love righteousness, uprightness, and right standing with
God and hate wickedness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with
the oil of gladness above Your fellows.8 Your garments are all fragrant with myrrh, aloes, and cassia; stringed instruments make You glad.
9 Kings’ daughters are among Your honorable women; at Your right hand stands the queen in gold of Ophir.
Not only has the King gifted you a story, writer. He’s asked you to
write for Him. A story that displays part of His glory like no one else
can. A story that pierces deadened souls with His Light, Beauty, and
Truth.
It may seem like a tall order to write for the King. But your King
has not left you without help. He has promised to be involved in the
process. And our response to that promise is to be twofold:
Psalm 45:10a – Hear, O daughter, consider, submit, and consent to my instruction:
Seek and Consent to His Instruction
When you write for the King, you are inspired.
When you write WITH the King, writer, you’ve entered into your calling.
But to write with the King with the King we must do one thing:
Psalm 45:10b – forget also your own people and your father’s house;
11 So will the King desire your beauty; because He is your Lord, be submissive and reverence and honor Him.
Forget Your Father’s House.
This one can be tricky, writer. The “fathers” of writing do not have
all you need to write the story you’ve been gifted. The King does not
gift imitations or copies. To write for the King is to do a new thing.
The beauty of YOUR story is what He desires. Not the mimicry of another.
But do not fear, writer. As we submit to our King and honor the uniqueness of His gift to us, something beautiful happens.
Psalm 45:12 – And, O daughter of Tyre, the richest of the people shall entreat your favor with a gift.
13 The King’s daughter in the inner part [of the palace] is all glorious; her clothing is inwrought with gold.
14 She shall be brought to the King in raiment of needlework;
with the virgins, her companions that follow her, she shall be brought
to You.
When you write for the King, the King will open doors of—the right
ones—of favor. The King will bring you the people you need to help you
on your writing journey. The King will also show you how to raise up
your spiritual “sons”—His stories—and get them to the people who need to
hear them.
Psalm 45:15 – With gladness and rejoicing will they be brought; they will enter into the King’s palace.
16 Instead of Your fathers shall be Your sons, whom You will make princes in all the land.
17 I will make Your name to be remembered in all generations;
therefore shall the people praise and give You thanks forever and ever.
When you write for the King, you will never have to wonder if your
work will have meaning and impact, for His words—the words He’s gifted
you—will not come back void. He will cause His name to be remembered.
So let’s go, writer.
Of all the “who’s” we might write for, let’s write for the King!
When we write for Him, there is always a reason to write.
